Sonia Ali

Having worked in industries such as banking and luxury fashion, I went through a career change to the arts through studying at City Lit Institute and then my Masters in Art/Space/Nature (Edinburgh) and MRes Creative Practice Research (Glasgow). My practice has gone through many forms including performance, sound, sculpture and collaborations with scientists but has remained based on the themes ‘BIO/GEO/COSMO’ and seeks to portray the possibilities of the unseen:unheard. In more recent years Ive gone round in a big circle back to my first passion – painting exploring both realistic and abstract themes.

My picture is a 10 inch by 8 inch oil painting on home prepared corrugated cardboard.I find this less likely to get damaged than canvas. The frame is also of cardboard and one that I made only to photograph my paintings and not to exhibit or sell.

At the present time I can’t decide if I want the painting to be sold.

Incidentally ,I have now converted to acrylic paints as I find that they satisfy how I paint and also what I try to achieve.

David Boland

I took up art again after I retired in 2007 and attended leisure art classes at Wanstead House, run by Anna Bissett, Eamon Everall and Patrick Purcell. My principal interests are in portraits and the human figure, with a sideline in architectural subjects. I work mainly in charcoal, chalk, watercolour and gouache, and occasionally acrylic.

‘Des Res U.E.L. 1’ (printing ink on canvas 31″ x 30″ (79 x 76cm).

I am a retired BT manager having worked for BT International for over 30 years after which I undertook formal art training culminating in an MA in Fine Art at the University of East London in 2005. (The painting shown here was painted there and sold to the architect of the Docklands campus where I was situated.) I mainly paint semi figurative and abstracted compositions in oils, acrylics and printing inks although not so much now that I am getting older.
